Yarnbombing the YMCA: International Women’s Day

On Saturday 10th March, Aunty hosted a yarnbombing workshop for young women (age 13-16 years) from a variety of youth groups from Wyre.  Activities included dance and various arts and crafts activities and took place at Fleetwood YMCA …Young (wo)man, there’s no need to feel down, la la la.

Participants learned how to get crafty and stitch together a variety of woolly loveliness to create a flower garden outside the entrance to Tommy’s the local youth club.  All in all, it was a lovely day, we had some great positive feedback from the groups and created a woolly wilderness to boot, fabulous!

Flying the Flag: a crowdsourced textile art project

Hey wassup ma Knittaz!

We’ve been asked to contribute piece of textile work to an art project that will be exhibited in Blackpool in March. We need to create a knitted/crocheted American flag. Can you help us?

Your mission is to make squares for the flag.

Squares need to be:

  • Knitted or crocheted (any pattern/stitch)
  • Measure 5 inches squared
  • Red, white or blue (try and stick to royal/bright blue and bright red, slight colour variations will be fine)

We’ll collect the squares at the next KWA session – 6pm on Mon 6th Feb at Claremont Park Community Centre. If you can help, please let us know how many squares you will make (and what colour) . You can do this by emailing us (infoATauntysocialDOTcoDOTuk), via Twitter (_@AuntySocial_) or via Facebook. If you can’t make it to KWA in Feb to hand them in, just let us know and we can give you a postal address or arrange to get them picked up if you live locally.

Ready?

Steady?

KNIT!

Knittaz with Attitude: Keep Blackpool toasty!

Sorry for the delay in posting, but we’ve had a busy, busy week at Aunty Towers!

The second KWA stitch-up took place last Monday at Claremont Park Community Centre, Claremont Rd, Blackpool.  Following the success of last month’s session, we were delighted to meet some more new faces to ‘chat knit’ to.

A few special mentions go out to:

  • Caz AKA ‘Buffet the banquet slayer’ who excelled herself by putting on another tasty spread.
  • Pat (now know as Crochet-Grandmaster Pat): for sharing her amazing crochet skills.
  • Katya: for showing everyone how quickly you can learn a new skill and be damn good at it.
  • Mel for general running around like an idiot-hole, making sure everything is running smoothly.
  • Gwynneth: tea-lady extroadinaire.

KWA will continue to meet on the 1st Monday of every month, 6pm to 8:30pm at Claremont Park.  All newcomers welcome.  For more details visit the KWA Facebook page

Knittaz with Attitude: Straight outta Fair Isle…

Last night was the first Knittaz with Attitude (KWA) session at Claremont Park Community Centre, Claremont Rd, Blackpool.  22 knitwits came along to knit one, purl one and maybe drop one!

Our knittaz either brought their own work or joined in with our yarnbombing project…part 1 making snuggly little lamp-post cosies 🙂 with slogans such as:

– I love lamp (post)
– Keep Blackpool Toasty
– Big up your knitting needles
– Son of a stitch
– Aunty says “yeah boi!”

It was lovely to meet new people and see new faces, as well as learn new skills from our more experienced members (yes Pat, that’s you!).  We also shared info on where to get the best deals on woolly goodness as well as inspiration for new projects.

All of this was, of course accompanied by the mother of all buffets…good times!

Thanks to all who turned up and to Caz and Mel for the yummy food, you will now be known as Buffet the Banquet Slayers.

KWA will continue to meet on the 1st Monday of every month, 6pm to 8:30pm at Claremont Park.  All newcomers welcome.  For more details visit the KWA Facebook page
