Helen Kay
Studio Technician
Helen is an alternative process photographer with a love for the Victorian processes. Materiality within her work is extremely important to her.
Her artistic practice centers around memory and archive, and she is especially interested in the distortions that arise in memory over time. Helen is currently working on a long-term project using photography to explore place and memory in the landscape; the trace that society leaves, both personal and industrial.
Helen first came to photography as a young child, experiencing the darkroom space early, spending time with her Dad as he developed and printed film at home. She retained a keen interest as she got older and, after 20 years in the Post Office, she returned to education as a mature student to study photography. Two years of further education were followed by another three of higher education. Helen graduated in 2019, having gained a first class degree with honours.
When at Aunty Social Helen can generally be found upstairs, either in the Darkroom or looking after the workshop space. This time indoors is offset by a passion for open space and wildness, spending as much time as possible outdoors in nature.
