The Discomfort Blanket – update

Geared up from the amazing response to We’re Sew Done, Knittaz With Attitude talked about how the Conservative Party conference is heading to Blackpool in March 2022 and we decided that we should take this opportunity to send a message that highlights how the decisions of the current government have affected Blackpool people.

We decided that we would like to create a quilt to be displayed during the Conservative Party conference at the Winter Gardens. Group members created textile squares to illustrate the ways that we’ve all been affected by the actions and inaction of the current government.

This project didn’t just come about because it’s the Conservative party per se, it just happens that they are the party in government and they have the power to make changes. However a lot of the pieces that have been submitted do relate specifically to the Conservative Party; We asked the participants to share their feelings and they did just that.

The pieces cover a variety of topics. Some squares relate to NHS cuts, the Levelling Up agenda, fuel and food poverty, the hostile environment faced by refugees and the Windrush generation. Others look at poor health, low life expectancy, lack of social care, pay gaps and state pension inequality. It’s a real mix.

The quilt will be displayed in Blackpool Town Centre at Charabanc, 1 Olympia Buildings, Coronation St, Blackpool, FY1 4NY from 18 March 2022.

Come and hang out with us in April

The Discomfort Blanket

Yesterday our Knittaz With Attitude met to discuss and plan projects for later in the year.

Geared up from the amazing response to We’re Sew Done, we talked about how the Conservative Party conference is heading to Blackpool in March 2022 and decided that we should take this opportunity to send a message that highlights how the decisions of the current government have affected Blackpool people.

We decided that we would like to create a quilt to be displayed during the Conservative Party conference at the Winter Gardens on 18-19 March 2022.

We’re asking you to create a textile square that illustrates the ways that we’ve all been affected by the actions and inaction of the current government.

Making Details

The idea is to make a quilt which encapsulates all of our feelings and issues relating to the current government.Squares can contain text, patterns or images. The content is up to you, however we will start a thread (in the Facebook and Whatsapp groups) where you can list your general messages so that we have an idea of what everyone is doing.

  • Total size 200cm x 200cm
  • 3 rows of squares measuring 40cm x 40cm
  • 4 rows of squares measuring 20cm x 20cm
  • There will be 55 squares in total

We will be able to provide fabric and haberdashery. Feel free to use your own if you prefer.

  • Blu and Catherine will start divvying up materials at Charabanc very soon.
  • We will create a quick form so that you can request your preferred square size(s)

Want to take part?

We’ve had to close the sign-up survey now as we’re getting very close to our deadline. Please keep an eye on our website/socials for future call outs. <3

We’re Sew Done Book: Donate & Pre-Order

We’re creating a We’re Sew Done book to document this project and raise funds for local women’s projects.

What is it?

Knittaz with Attitude wants to create a book that documents the project, showcases the artworks and most importantly highlights the experiences of women on the Fylde Coast.

What we’re fundraising for

We need to pay for:

  • Print costs
  • An ISBN number (to help us sell copies through bookshops)
  • Design/layout work

Once the book has been published, we plan to donate proceeds to local women’s organisations and projects, specifically those who offer practical support to women experiencing violence and those working to improve women’s health and wellbeing.

It’s been a privilege to share the stories and experiences of women on the Fylde Coast and we hope that you can support the next stage of this project.

We started a crowdfunding campaign (with lots of lovely rewards) running from 24 January to 24 February 2022.

Please donate what you can.

KWA February session

Join us for a relaxed session at the Upside Down.

We’re going to plan some projects for later in the year, so have a think about what you’d like to do.
Bear in mind that the Conservative Party conference is heading to Blackpool in March, so any ideas of messages that we can send to them would be a good starting point.

We’ll have good tunes, yummy food and plenty of brews.

Photo Gallery: The Halloween Crafternoon Tea Party

On Saturday 30 October we hosted artist Morgan Dowdall for some magical inclusive ceramics workshops at Blackpool Central Library. The relaxed Halloween gathering was hosted by Harry Clayton-Wright and attendees created striking ceramic collages inspired by the theme of magic.

This event was part of the Crafts Council’s 50th anniversary celebrations which consist of a season of nationwide exhibitions, learning events, fairs, and digital activities that celebrates the value of craft to empower, enrich and connect our society. We were super chuffed to be selected as a Make! Craft Live! partner.

Make! Craft! Live!

Celebrating 50 Years of the Crafts Council

Make! Craft! Live! is a season of nationwide exhibitions, learning events, fairs, and digital activities that celebrates the value of craft to empower, enrich and connect our society. Running from October 2021 to October 2022, this marks 50 years of the Crafts Council and will be delivered through craft activities taking place at venues across the UK such as craft studios, museums, galleries, schools and community centres.

Aunty Social is pleased to be selected as one of the Crafts Council’s partners. Working together we will prioritise the social and environmental value of making, and platform new voices and narratives that have been historically overlooked. Championing ideas of diversity, sustainability, and resilience, our activity on is a call to action to rethink the role of making as a vehicle for social change.

So what are we doing?

The Halloween Crafternoon Tea Party
