Open Call: Web design for the Winter Gardens Film Festival

July 2021

Objectives
We need a new website that helps us to showcase this unique festival by:

🎬 Increasing awareness of the festival,

🎬 Generating more online ticket sales; and

🎬 Boosting engagement with our blog posts and social media accounts.

This annual film festival showcases the best of modern and classic black and white film in the spectacular historic setting of Blackpool Winter Gardens.

The programmes are always varied, covering a range of genres from musicals, comedy, horror, documentary, silent classics, artists’ moving image and contemporary film. We also host a range of live cinema events, workshops, archive film talks, live music and performance.

The main screenings take place in the art deco Opera House and Grand Foyer of Blackpool’s famous Grade II* listed Winter Gardens.

  • Every two years we host a film competition with entries from across the globe.
  • Each year we choose a theme for our Sunday program. Past recent themes have included Vote 100: women in film and Protest: Take a stand.
  • We host special events for specific groups such as screenings for schools and relaxed (dementia-friendly) screenings.
  • We always host a number of vintage themed events. We have a loyal following of people who adore living history and dress up in vintage clothing for the occasion.

The festival is a partnership project between the Winter Gardens Trust and Aunty Social CIC. 2022 will be its 6th year. Festival events were not held in 2020 or 2021 due to lockdown. We are a not-for-profit film festival. We have a large team of dedicated volunteers and we often hold events that raise awareness and funds for important local and local causes. We also host pop-up cinema screenings and events in a number of community venues throughout the year.

If you are interested in applying for this opportunity, please download the web design brief.

Due to our funding conditions, this opportunity is limited to individuals and organisations based in the UK.

This opportunity is supported by Arts Council England

Lights, camera, action! Volunteer character actors needed for Film Festival opening night

Some Like it Hot – Friday 16 March 2018, Blackpool Winter Gardens

We’re pleased to announce that we will be hosting an immersive screening of the 1959 classic Some Like it Hot as the opening night event of the Winter Gardens Film Festival.

We are looking for volunteers to take part in our live cinema event at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool.

About the event
This event cinema screening takes place in the Grand Foyer of heritage venue Blackpool Winter Gardens. The venue will be set up as a late 1920’s nightclub. There will be cocktails on arrival in the secret speakeasy and a 1920’s style party with a live band after the screening.

Volunteer roles

You will be in character as customers and staff of a 1920’s nightclub and speakeasy will be based in the Opera House entrance, Cocktail Bar and the Grand Foyer.

You don’t need any previous acting experience and you will not need to learn a script. Costumes will be provided, or if you have suitable 1920’s clothing, you can wear your own costume.

There will be a workshop session to:

  • Familiarise you with the film
  • Show you the venue
  • Tell you about your role
  • Fit your costumes

Key Dates
You will need to attend a workshop session before the event, we will give you date options after you have signed up.

Show date: Friday 16 March 2018 – 6pm until late

About the film

  • Some Like It Hot (1959)
  • Director:Billy Wilder
  • Starring: Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon

Two down on their luck jazz musicians find themselves out of a job and on the run after the police raid the speakeasy they perform in and they inadvertently stumble upon a gang war. With no money and nowhere to hide, a gig with Sweet Sue and her Society Syncopators at a Florida beach resort seems like the perfect getaway. There’s just one problem: the Syncopators are an all-female band, and Joe and Jerry aren’t women – yet.

On Friday 9 December, we took a trip back to the 1940s for an event cinema screening of Stormy Weather (1943). We experienced this fabulous film in the atmospheric Grand Foyer of the Winter Gardens, then had a swinging time dancing to the sounds of our live band the Billionaires.

We hope you enjoy these photos by CJ Griffiths photography.
