Heritage Open Days – Designing a Good Time

Ever wondered about the design of buildings that helped Blackpool visitors & residents enjoy their leisure time? We’ve got good news for you. If you’re a fan of Art Deco, Moderne or Victorian architecture, here’s your chance to see original plans.

Drop into Aunty Social for a special display of our collection of original architectural plans dating from 1912 to 1960.

The 27 architectural drawings depict a variety of Blackpool’s licensed premises from cinemas to pubs, hotels to the airfield. The plans cover both proposed new buildings and changes to existing premises.

Not only do these plans show the design considerations given to these places of leisure; you’ll be surprised at the level of decoration used in these working documents, which can be considered works of art in their own right.

These hand drawn plans highlight the impressive technical and decorative skills of the draughts people who relied on intensive training and practice to produce beautiful and accurate plans in the days before computer aided design.
