Blackpool Social Club Wikithon
Blackpool Social Club is building a community of Wikimedians to improve Blackpool’s online cultural presence.
As part of our current residency with Wikimedia UK, we are hosting a day-long Wikithon – a period dedicated to writing and editing Wikipedia content about Blackpool. We are seeking people with local knowledge or interest as well as photographers and archivists to help us represent the best of Blackpool to the online global community.
Since 2012 Blackpool Social Club has strived to bring readers on the Fylde Coast the very best of creativity and culture. Now we want you to help us show the rest of the world all our vibrant town has to offer, even after the lights go out.
On 14th October we will meet at Aunty Social at 28 Topping Street where we’ll learn how to edit Wiki articles and upload images to Wiki Commons. We’ll look at the existing pages for Blackpool and all things associated with it and identify areas that need improving or adding before making a start on edits and additions.
If you have an area of expertise then you are encouraged to contribute in this area. If not, don’t worry! There’s plenty we can learn about together. If you would like to explore what’s out there already and come armed with ideas and research, even better!
Please bring any resources you have such as reference books or existing research and a laptop if you have one. If you don’t please let us know at [email protected] and we will do our best to provide one.
Photographers – please bring your archives of images that you are willing to share under creative commons licences. You can also bring your cameras and head out and about to capture images of things we might want to capture in the immediate surrounding area.
This project has the power to create an alternative and truer picture of Blackpool in the public eye. We know this is an important topic for so many people in the town so we hope you’ll support us and join us in our efforts.
