High Street Patterns – Repeat pattern design with Bonnie Craig

Explore Blackpool’s architectural detail and learn how to use its shapes and textures to create your own repeat pattern designs.

Join visual artist and designer Bonnie Craig for a day creating your own original repeat patterns by hand using traditional design techniques.

We’ll start by exploring the Heritage Action Zone area around Topping Street and sketching details from the buildings we see, looking out for the decoration and details that often go unnoticed.
Then we’ll bring our drawings back to the studio and learn how to create striking repeat patterns from these, using just drawing and cutting materials and a photocopier.
We’ll play with scale, shape, texture, colour and composition, and learn about what makes a repeat pattern work well.

You’ll go home with your original and repeated pattern designs, and knowledge of an easy and satisfying technique that means you can create more of your own designs.

What you will need
-An umbrella or waterproof in case of wet weather.
-Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes as we’ll be walking around the town centre.

Important access information
-This activity will include walking around the town centre.
-The rest of the session is in the upstairs workshop space. We’re in the process of having a lift installed work should e complete by late August 2023. It’s a single flight of 14 steps then you go around the corner and there are two small steps. Once you’re upstairs there’s a loo. You shouldn’t need to come downstairs for anything until the end of the event. If you can’t manage the stairs but really want to attend, please let us know using the questions that appear when you book your ticket and we will try to move the activity downstairs.

About the Artist
The workshop will be led by visual artist Bonnie Craig, who uses pattern in her work to connect place, people and stories, creating large-scale pieces, such as installations in public spaces, and small-scale pieces, such as one-off prints. www.bonnie-craig.com
